Posted: 10/27/2020

DALLAS, October 27, 2020 — The American Heart Association (AHA), the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) and John Wiley & Sons (Wiley) are joining forces to publish a new peer-reviewed, Open Access journal titled, Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology. The collaboration includes the call for an Editor-in-Chief of the new journal, a role also announced today. The journal is expected to start accepting papers and publishing in early 2021. The new journal will be produced bi-monthly, available online-only and all papers will be Open Access.

Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology will be focused on reporting clinical, translational and basic sciences research on interventional, endovascular, medical and surgical management of stroke and vascular disease of the brain, spinal cord, and head and neck. This includes research on minimally invasive and innovative approaches to providing clinical, neuroendovascular and neurosurgical care from imaging and clinical management teams. Imaging, video illustrations, case reports, innovative technique, angiographic anatomy, clinicopathological correlation, medical devices, technical advances and review papers are also welcomed.

The American Heart Association’s President Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAAN, FAHA, stated, “We are proud to unite with the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology to launch this new journal, Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology, in 2021. The field of vascular and interventional neurology is growing rapidly, we are learning more every day about the incredible complexities of the cerebrovascular system – new techniques to diagnose and treat while improving outcomes, quality of life and length of life. It is critical that we empower and inform clinicians and researchers with this invaluable journal – so they are able to improve patient care and outcomes. Patients are relying on us to help them live longer and healthier lives.” Elkind is a tenured professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons; and chief of the Division of Neurology Clinical Outcomes Research and Population Sciences in the department of neurology at Columbia University in New York City.

“We’re excited to be launching Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology in collaboration with the American Heart Association. This journal will be an important platform for researchers and clinicians focused on vascular care and innovations in new procedures and treatments to share their findings,” said Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology President David S. Liebeskind, M.D., FAHA, FAAN, FWSO, FSVIN, director of the UCLA Stroke Center and professor of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology will be the second online-only, Open Access journal published by the American Heart Association, in addition to the Journal of the American Heart Association, which is also published by Wiley. It expands the AHA’s robust, existing portfolio of 12 peer-reviewed, print and online, subscription-based scientific journals: Circulation; Stroke; Hypertension; Journal of the American Heart Association; Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology; Circulation Research; Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology; Circulation: Genomic and Precision Medicine; Circulation: Heart Failure; Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging; Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions; and Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

“We are pleased to facilitate collaborations among scholarly societies like the American Heart Association and the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology,” said Jay Flynn, chief product officer, research at Wiley. “With the launch of Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology, more researchers will be able to publish Open Access studies that advance knowledge of stroke and diseases of the brain.”
