Introduction to Neuroendovascular Procedures
What are Endovascular Procedures?
Endovascular Procedures are minimally invasive surgeries that are performed via vascular access.
Plain English: We access part of your body via small devices and wires through arteries and veins.
What are Neuroendovascular Procedures?
Neuroendovascular Procedures are endovascular procedures for central nervous system (i.e. Brain and Spinal Cord)
Plain English: Minimally invasive procedures for diagnosing and treating problems in brain, spinal cord and Spine.
Typical Procedure:
Pre-Procedure:
Outpatient history, physical and consultation are done for elective case.
Pre operative labs look at kidney functions, blood clotting and other parameter for successful anesthesia.
Procedures are performed under local and general anesthesia.
Procedure:
Area of the procedure typically groin or arm is prepared by cleaning and cleansing.
The patient is taken into sterilized angiography Suite.
The Neurologist numbs the area with local anesthetic
A small incision (few mm) is made where the catheter is placed (vein or the artery)
Catheter is place and then guided through the arteries to the area to be examined.
Contrast material is injected through the catheter and reaches the blood vessels being studied.
X-rays are taken with contract material in the vessel to find problems.
Then the catheter is removed
The incision site is closed by placing pressure or specialized device (e.g. Angio Seal)
Post-Procedure:
The patient is typically monitored from 4 to 24 hour after the procedure; depending on the complexity of the procedure.
